I am Sumin Park, a computational linguist. I am currently a visiting assistant professor at the College of Humanities, Seoul National University, where I teach in the Data Science for the Humanities interdisciplinary program.
Research Interests
Sentence embeddings
As a computational linguist and NLP researcher, I work on methods that represent the meaning of a sentence as a vector, such as KR-SBERT. I am especially interested in two questions:
- embedding models that can capture when sentences of the same form are used with different meanings within a larger context
- measures that reflect not only the semantic similarity between two texts but also their relatedness at other levels, such as pragmatics and stylistics
Linguistic variation
As a linguist, I model linguistic variation quantitatively and apply it to a range of texts. I describe, through frequency, co-occurrence, and distribution in corpora, how the same referent, meaning, or function is realized differently under different conditions — reaching beyond literal meaning into the pragmatic, stylistic, and social.
- Variation across time (diachronic): lexical and semantic change in historical Korean and historical corpora (e.g. the taste adjective dalda “sweet” in late-Joseon cookbooks, the character 鬼 in the Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty)
- Variation across social conditions (synchronic): differences by speaker–addressee relation, medium, and readership (e.g. gendered [X-男]/[X-女] references in news headlines; speakers’ self-reference terms in early Chinese histories)
